Our Trip to The Pueblo Bonito Resort in Cabo
We just got back from our first vacation in two years, so I wanted to shared the details of our trip to the Pueblo Bonito Resort in Cabo while they’re fresh in my mind.
First of all, I would like to start by saying that our son is at a very difficult age. I would be lying if I said we weren’t nervous about taking him on a plane, and bringing him on vacation with us. The last time we took a family vacation was two years ago around this time when we went to Cabo for my husband’s birthday. Gray was only one at the time so he was a lot easier to deal with.
The flight
Before we left, I hit up the dollar section at Target and got crayons and a coloring pad, finger puppets and all of these fun erasers. I also stocked up on snacks (crackers, veggie chips, fruit leathers, dried mangoes and animal cookies). My advice is to AVOID SUGAR AT ALL COSTS. The last thing you need on a plane is a toddler with a sugar high, am I right? Anywhoo, we were lucky enough that our flight to Cabo (American Airlines) had tv screens on the back of each seat so that coupled with Gray having a window seat kept him occupied. The flight is only 2.5 hours so it wasn’t too bad. Also, on the way back we flew on Alaska Airlines (which did not have tv screens) and it was definitely the more difficult flight for us.
Our Arrival
The prior week I had scheduled a sedan to pick us up from the airport and take us to the hotel. It was pricier than taking a shuttle but the person who I spoke with told me the shuttle was an hour and a half drive since it made several stops, and the sedan would take 30 mins. As a parent, sometimes it’s worth the extra money to not have to deal with a long drive, a crying toddler and a bunch of strangers. The sedan was definitely worth it. As soon as we arrived at the resort, we had several people greeting us including Alfredo who informed us that he was our butler (SAY WHAT?!). They loaded all of our luggage into a golf cart (the resort is HUGE so you take golf carts everywhere), and took us to our room for our in-room check-in. SO CONVENIENT. They had upgraded us from the suite my husband had booked us to a Presidential Executive Suite that had a kitchenette, living room, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The suite was so beautiful, and we had a gorgeous view of the ocean and one of the amazing pools. Alfredo then got down to business and talked to us about our itinerary. I had already been arranging a few surprises for my hubby before our visit, and Alfredo told me he would help plan all of the details.
Day 1
After we were done with our check-in, we settled into our room. We got changed and decided to walk around the resort a bit. The grounds were covered in beautiful flowers and greenery, and Gray was so excited to discover that they had flamingos, parrots and a peacock. There were even several iguanas roaming the resort, which was a dream come true for Gray. We walked through the main pool and down a walkway to the beach. Coming from California, I can’t even tell you how nice it is to set foot on a beach that isn’t crowded. The waves are extremely choppy and huge so there’s no swimming, but we had fun chasing Gray in the sand. We had reservations at their Japanese restaurant, Tazuna for dinner that night, but Gray was overly tired so we decided to go to The Market (their new culinary hall). I totally pictured a food court, but it was super cute. They had Mexican, Italian, an adorable 50’s diner, ice cream, a candy bar, dessert, a bar and several other options. We opted for Mexican (which was a little salty for our taste), but the delicious ice cream we had for dessert made up for it. Gray had two different types of sorbet so he was sugar wasted haha.
Day 2
Saturday was my husband’s actual birthday, so we woke up and gave him his cards and a gift. We decided to order room service since we had massages scheduled for 9 and 11 am. I ordered smoked salmon on a bagel, my husband ordered chilaquiles, we shared the french toast and Gray got some potatoes and turkey sausage. Overall the french toast was definitely my favorite thing we ordered from room service for breakfast. My massage was scheduled first so my husband stayed in the room with Gray, and Alfredo picked me up to take me to the spa. I was warmly greeted, and the sweet woman at the front desk explained each of the oils to me in detail. I chose a citrus oil that smelled amazing and was supposed to give you energy and help with skin firming. I was given a tour of the spa and then they took me to my locker. After I changed I waited in a relaxing room until my masseuse came to take me to the massage room. As a mom, I would be happy being able to sit in a closet alone for an hour so getting to relax for an hour while getting a massage was AMAZING. My husband went to his next, and loved his massage as well. He stayed to enjoy the jacuzzi and steam room after, and came back so relaxed. We both agreed that the service at the spa was impeccable. While my husband was at the spa, Gray and I went down to the beach, made sand castles and took some photos. That afternoon we had reserved some seats at the children’s pool. Despite the fact that it was kid friendly, it was really nice and also had a swim-up bar. A super sweet woman gave Gray her daughter’s unicorn floatie because they were leaving that day. We ordered a couple of drinks and had shrimp cocktails (Gray had a hot dog). After that we went back to them room for a nap.
We had reservations at La Frida that night, and we had arranged for one of the hotel’s certified babysitters to stay with Gray. We were definitely apprehensive about leaving Gray with a babysitter, but we met with the concierge and filled out paperwork about Gray’s food allergies, and found out some details about the babysitter. She was very sweet and we got her phone number so we could call to check on Gray. La Frida is inspired by Frida Kahlo and the restaurant has earned a AAA Four Diamond Award for excellence in cuisine. The restaurant was dimly lit and had a cool, moody atmosphere. The customer service was amazing, and the manager came by several times to make sure that our experience was going well. They had a drink cart that came to our table, and a mixologist made hand-crafted cocktails. The Frida Margarita is a MUST if you ever go there. We had crab empinadas as our appetizer, I had a jumbo shrimp dish and my husband got the ribeye. Everything was so so delicious, and it tasted even better being able to eat it without worrying about a toddler throwing a tantrum in the middle of dinner. They sang to my husband and brought him a delicious corn cake. We also tried the Oaxaca ice cream and a delicious chocolate lava cake. When we got back from dinner, Gray told us how much fun he had coloring with the babysitter, and we my husband had a super yummy birthday dinner. WIN WIN.
Day 3
Sunday morning we went to brunch at La Nao. There was a huge variety of breakfast food-from a smoothie bar, an omelette bar, Mexican food and a ton of pastries to a bloody Mary bar-there was something for everyone. I was so relieved that even Gray (who’s allergic to everything) had a huge selection of food to choose from. After breakfast, we decided to leave the resort to go to downtown. It was only about 15 minutes from our hotel, so we took a taxi. We walked around and went in few shops, and then found a boat to take us to Los Arcos. Typically we would have liked to walk along the beach and grab a drink, but Gray was being crazy so we skipped that part. The weather was perfect, and of course Gray was super excited to be on a boat. Our guide showed us all of the usual things-lovers beach, the Scooby Doo rock, and of course Los Arcos. Gray got to see fish in the glass bottom boat, we saw a bunch of seals and sea lions and huge cruise ships. We stopped to get some snacks after the boat ride and then grabbed some tacos before catching a taxi back to the hotel.
That night my husband and I had reservations at Quivira Steakhouse. After a long day dealing with Gray in the sun, a date night was much-needed. Gray stayed with a babysitter again, and a van picked us up to take us to the steakhouse (which was a bit further than the other resort restaurants). The restaurant is located at the Quivira Golf Club and has indoor and outdoor seating with an amazing ocean view. My husband got the filet mignon and I got the sea bass which were both very good. For dessert we got the creme brulee and turtle cake and both were delicious but filling. It was super windy that night so we were excited to get back to our room to curl up in bed with Gray and watch a movie.
Day 4-Our last day
Our last day came way too fast. We went to breakfast at La Nao again, but the selection was not as large as it had been for the Sunday brunch. After breakfast we walked around and then took a golf cart back to the room. My husband took a nap on the patio while Gray and I went down to the beach one last time. We went down a different pathway, which lead us to a side of the beach which was completely empty. We looked for seashells and took photos by the rocks. One of the guys who works for the resort let Gray sit on his ATV and Gray was thrilled. We walked back to the room, and started packing. Alfredo was awesome enough to get us a late checkout at 3pm since our sedan was picking us up for our flight at 3:15. He came to our room right before, and did an in-room check out before taking us to the lobby. We waited in the adorable rocking chairs until our shuttle came and we even had a few minutes to go say a prayer in the beautiful chapel that’s located near the lobby. We were definitely sad to leave “our new home” as Gray called it.
Traveling with a toddler is by no means relaxing, but the staff at Pueblo Bonito made everything so easy for us. We were treated like family by everyone, and every detail of our stay was planned perfectly for us. By the end of our trip Gray was going up to anyone who worked there, and giving them a high-five and talking to them about the animals he saw that day. They helped make my husband’s birthday so special, and we made so many great memories. We had such an amazing trip and we would definitely go back to Pueblo Bonito!
I hope you guys enjoyed my review! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions, and if you would like more info. on the resort click here!

Oh my God. Your trip looks magical. I can’t get over how beautiful the pics are. We went to Cabo last year and most of my pics are my kids having temper tantrums on the floor of the resort. I found it amazing what my kids could complain about. Gorgeous post!

Thank you so much! hahah we definitely had our share of tantrums too, but luckily my son is pretty good about taking pics! lol I can definitely see how it would be challenging traveling with two kids!

Your vacation seems well deserved. I can see some parallels between your vacation and a vacation I’m planning this summer with my family. It will be our first vacation in over two years as well.

I *still* haven’t gone to Mexico — and you would think it’d be my first international trip considering I live in California and it’s so close and a relatively affordable flight and hotel stay. A resort is probably what I do because, as you mention, it’s the easiest in terms of figuring out what to do and it’s all inclusive.
Great post! x
